Farming Sustainably

PRESERVING THE LAND WITH REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

To be responsible stewards of our farmland, each season we continue to build upon our sustainable and regenerative agriculture practices.

We enrich our soil by following Maryland Nutrient Management Program requirements, using split fertilizer applications, and spreading tons of donated poultry manure in the fields which enriches our soil.

We use rotational grazing with our chickens and cattle and our cattle graze on harvested corn and cover crop fields which reduces feed costs and creates fertilizer for next year’s crops. The Farm continually looks for ways to reduce tillage to minimize soil erosion and nutrient run-off and 32 of the 40 acres of sweet corn planted in 2024 used no-till methods.

Last season we also rolled and crimped 10 acres of cereal rye cover crop to plant no-till crops. The recent acquisition of a no-till seed drill has allowed us to no-till seed up to 85% of the Farm’s fields with cover crop—with a goal to no-till seed as close to 100% as possible.

The purchase of the adjacent Farm in the spring of 2023—which added 60 tillable acres—ensures we can be judicious stewards of our natural resources by allowing various fields to rest for a season which improves soil health and conservation.
